Did I really need a new Battery or??? The starter will drop down, and you just work unit through the wires and hoses. I would test the signal to the starter solenoid to confirm it is or isn't present. Once it is off the housing you will have to twist and turn it to get it down and past the steering shaft. Also make sure your battery connections are clean.
Be sure it is getting good voltage, positive and negative. I completely removed the bracket too. Do I have your authorization to proceed? I have a 1996 328ic that needs a starter. I own the 101projects book, as well as other manuals, and all of them are ridiculously inefficient at explaining how to remove the starter or install the starter. Without the steps it makes no sense so you might as well delete my other posts if you don't want to let your readers help out. That is if the bolts are frozen. I dropped the pan and the skid plate and re-examined the area. This Job should take about 4 to 5 hours.
Jesse March 24, 2016 Followup from the Pelican Staff: The wiring should be pretty clear in the Bentley Manual. The 10mm fits the torx bolts. If both are present, the starter is faulty. In other words, don't risk it. Loosen the lower bolt on the starter first. Once the wires are removed you will probably have to tap and wiggle the starter back and forth to get it of of the tranny housing. And it was so tight, that using a 12 point wrench started to strip it. You have to use a breaker bar because the area around the bolts on the tranny housing are too narrow to get a socket wrench straight on the bolts.
I have a M52 engine btw. I got the bolt on the outer side off ok , the top one was a job , all in all a half hour job took over two hours. An added tip: Connect a small inline fuse from one end to the other, and a small amount of current will continue to flow, keeping your radio presets from being cleared out when the battery is disconnected. Starter tested bad, put in new one. Then remove the starter fasteners and remove the starter from the engine. June 13, 2014 Followup from the Pelican Staff: Thanks for the additional info. Because the starter motor mounting bolts are not easy to access, a long extension with a universal joint mounted on a proper sized socket could be used. Between my book and the Bentley manual, it should show you all that you need to know. And the explanations being spread out over different projects just makes it annoying.
Please help me with the esiest way to access the starter motor. Once you get it loose go to the upper bolt. Starter motor electrical terminal fastener torque specifications for all models: M5 terminal fasteners: 44 inch lbs. Then another 5 minutes for the rubber foam and take the 3 plastic screw clips off the brake area housing and you will see those bolts aren't that hard to get to from above. If you happen to strip the bolts, good luck, cause it just became 1000% more difficult. Try using a long extension with a socket and a punch to tap it out from below.
Also disconnect the much smaller wire harness that plugs into the terminals on the back of the starter solenoid. Have a no start condition on my 98 318ti. The mounting bolts are threaded into the starter motor Fig. Once I got it loose though, the 12 point curved wrench worked fine.
