Sol follows her children one day and learns that they have been going back to the cave instead of to school. For reasons that defy explanation after such an experience, Sol and her husband Félix allow Sara and her brother Adolfo to take a quick hike in some nearby hills while they stay behind and engage in some heavy petting in the gas station parking lot. Sol learns that her husband purchased a gun for their protection. The symbolism and the story structure starts wavering in so many directions that the final conclusion is perhaps Bogliano wants the viewer to come up with a sensible interpretation for him. Perhaps we are seeing a revolution in Mexican horror cinema today.
She poisons Felix and Sara before an unseen presence attacks her in her home. The children do not say much about what happened in the cave on the hill, and their parents do not pressure them for answers. A psychologist shows the parents pictures the children drew from their time spent missing and Felix notices a van in them that he saw when he searched the hill on the night they disappeared. That night, there is a minor earthquake. In one scene he makes fantastic use of a heavy metal song playing on the car radio. As Felix and Sol prepare to leave the hotel in the morning, the police arrive with Adolfo and Sara, seemingly unharmed. The kids eventually reappear without explanation, but it becomes clear that they are not who they used to be, that something terrifying has changed them. Great acting can always be measured by how performers convey emotion without dialogue and these leads make deceptively simple roles mesmerizing. This film is classic horror film making at it's finest. The family stalks Lucio together and Sara goes into a panic when she spots him across the street from their family car. Sol and Felix are at a loss to explain the strange events. Her mother, Sol , helps her daughter clean-up in a local gas station restroom where she notices a creepy lurker peering through the door and leering at the blood-stained underwear sitting on the vanity. Felix returns to the gas station and learns that the man who drove the red truck is a workman named Lucio who lives nearby.
At night, lights flicker, strange noises are heard, and the children are seen levitating from their beds.
